Poker Terms: The Basics of Straights
Poker Terms:
Straights
A straight is simply five cards consecutively ordered in a row. They can be of any suit or of a mixed suit.
Example A
1. A, 2, 3, 4, 5 - The ace counts as a 1
2. 10, J, Q, K A - The Ace counts as an Ace :)
The Ace at the end of the second players hand represents the highest straight possible, while the 5 at the end of a straight in the first players hand is the lowest straight possible. If two people both have a straight in a show down, the person with the highest card at the end of the straight wins.
Example B
1. 2 Clubs, 3, Hearts, 4 Hearts, 5 Diamonds, 6 Clubs - Loser aka Muck. A muck is anyone that plays to the end of the hand or showdown and does not win.
2. 3 Clubs, 4 Clubs, 5 Hearts, 6 Diamonds, 7 Clubs - Winner 7 is higher than the opponents 6 of Clubs
If both people have the same highest card, its a tie, unless one of the players has their straight all in the same suit, and then its a Straight Flush.
Example C
1. 9 Hearts, 10 hearts, J Clubs, Q hearts, King hearts - tie
2. 9 diamonds, 10 diamonds, j diamonds, Q diamonds, King Clubs - tie
In Example C there is a tie and the players would split the pot in general however there are exceptions to a split which we will cover in a more advanced article.
Example C
1. 9 Hearts, 10 hearts, J Clubs, Q hearts, King hearts - muck
2. 9 diamonds, 10 diamonds, j diamonds, Q diamonds, King Diamonds - Winner
This time player 2 has doesn’t just have a straight they have a straight flush and that flushes out a little straight.
