Gambling Man: Croc Hunter Steve Irwin
This post has nothing to do with poker, but everything to do with gambling. Australia’s Steve Irwin, also known as The Crocodile Hunter, had the heart of a gambling man. I say had, because this great, passionate conservationist finally met his match.
While filming a new series, Ocean’s Deadliest, off the Great Barrier Reef, he swum too close to a stingray, which delivered a fatal poisonous barb from its tail to his chest, causing a hole in his heart. An emergency medical crew was unable to save him. The sad thing is, stingray barbs don’t usually kill. This one did because it got stuck in under his rib cage and pierced his heart.
As an avid fan of his, I always watched breathlessly, and increasingly felt he was getting too reckless. Many people echoed that sentiment when he held his baby son in one arm while feeding a croc with the other. He, like fellow Aussie Ray Meara, gambled constantly with his life.
He’s survived by American-born wife Terri and two children - Bindi Sue and Bob. Happy croc wrangling in the sky, you brave, foolish gambler. Only 44 - just a child in croc years.
