Promoting Poker In A Positive Light

Tight Poker is showing some support for US troops in Iraq and sending them a donation of poker chips. They’ve teamed up with Screaming Eagle Poker to distribute the donation. Screaming Eagle holds free weekly no-limit hold’em tourneys for the soldiers. [via Tight Poker]
In other philanthropic events, several poker pros have been donating money from their winnings to various worthy causes. For example, WPT (World Poker Tour) commentator Mike Sexton gave away half of his first-place, million-dollar winnings from the WSOP (World Series of Poker) Tournament of Champions. Consider how generous that really is, considering the government’s going to be wanting half of the money he won, essentially leaving him with no winnings.
Sexton donated that $500,000 to five different charities, including the Special Olympics, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Wounded Warrior Project, and others.
Sexton provies that, unlike a lot of celebrities, be they from the sports, music, or film, poker stars tend to be pretty down to earth people. Take Greg “Fossilman” Raymer for, instance, who is more than happy to sign autographs and pose for pictures, and generally promote the sport. And this from a former patent lawyer.
Fossilman is one of over 8600 entrants who started in the current WSOP tournament going on right now in Las Vegas. After most of the field is eliminated, the final 12 players in this 37th annual NL Texas Hold’em tourney win at least a million each. Maybe some of them will catch the giving bug and make donations as well.
Bravo to everyone for promoting the poker in a positive light.
