Why Keely Brown Doesn’t Like Poker On TV
Written by Raj on May 6th, 2006
Keely Brown has written an unintentionally hilarious article about why s/he doesn’t like poker on TV. The article does raise the fact that poker, especially Texas Hold’em, has taken over a lot prime-time TV slots on several channels. I can’t disagree; I’ve noticed this as well. Brown also implies that poker on TV “promotes sexism, gambling, etc.”. I’ve also written about the sexism, and the negative connotation of gambling. Don’t completely disagree.
Brown makes the strongest point that “Card games were never intended to be a spectator sport” and that watching poker on TV “has about the same entertainment value as watching someone unclog a toilet in a subway station’s men’s room.” That last bit made me howl. What’s Brown doing watching people unclog men’s room toilets?
I gotta say, in agreement, that most of the poker broadcasts (on 5 or 6 TV channels in and around Toronto, Canada) are truly dreadful to watch. They’re even more dreadful because many of them are showing complete unknowns, and I’m thinking of that old The Who song that asks “who the f**k are you?”. I don’t know you and you seem completely devoid of emotion. You also don’t seem to know how to play your hand. The camera angles suck, and the commentary is so low in volume that it sounds like a buzzing gnat.
On the other hand, you’ve got highly entertaining celebrity poker, which I’ll watch any day, even when comedian Brad Garrett steps over the line with his antics. But read Keely’s article (free registration required) and get a lesson on how poker is actually responsible for the existence of much of the United States. Probably very true but still a hilarious article.

[…] Anyway, I doubt that these episodes are a sign of any sort of trend. We’re not going to see CSI: Texas (Hold’em) anytime soon. Movies and cop shows have poker scenes for decades. So don’t worry Keely Brown. Poker isn’t going to overtake the entire TV schedule. […]
