WPT American Showdown

The American Chopper team of Poppa Paul Teutel and sons Paul Jr and Mikey squared off against Trading Spaces co-hosts Amy Wynn, Joe Farrell, and Ladykiller Carter Oosterhouse for a WPT charity tourney earlier today.

Champions Daniel Negreanu and Jennifer Harmond played lifeline coaches, advising their assigned team when a player raised a “red card”. (One call per player.)

Right away, it’s obvious (some of) the Tuetels know their poker. Poppa Paul, despite folding on a Doyle Brunson (10,2-offsuit, with which Brunson won 2 titles), manages to start off with several good hands, mostly competing with son Mikey. At least until Mikey bluffs out Poppa’s A,Q with a low straight draw to become chip leader ahead of dad and brother Paul Jr.

This is followed by  a monster pot of over 400K with QsQd (Mikey), KsKh (Carter), AhKd (Amy), Ac5d (Paul Jr). Amy then calls lifeline Danny N., who tells her she no longer has anything after the flop of 3c,2d,6h. The turn is 10s, with the pot up to over 600K. Carter calls lifeline, and Danny N. says go all in. The women in the audience go wild for the ladykiller. The pot’s now $683K. Deuce-h is the river. Mikey goes all in. Paul Jr. checks, then calls red card (lifeline). Jennifer Harmand (sp?) tells him they’re both (Mikey, Carter) all in, they’ve both got you beat: fold! So Mikey wins the side pot. Carter kicks butt and wins the main pot.

Amy Wynn is bumped into 6th by her own teammate, Carter.

Despite a few good hands, baby Mikey’s general principle is to go in swinging, just about playing everything and bluffing as much as possible. I believe Phil Hellmuth calls this “poker creature” the Jackal. Coach Danny N. tells Joe to move all in on a KsQs against Mikey’s 6h6d, on a flop of Kh,8d,Jd,4h. Joe takes the advice, and Mikey’s face drops, but he calls. The river’s a 5h, and Joe takes it.

Mikey gets a KhQs against Carter’s pocket AsAh and Paul Jr.’s 7h3d. The flop is 7c6hAd, to give Carter a trip. Paul’s out, Mikey calls 40K, and Carter’s cool as a cucumber - even when he gets an As on the turn. Four friggin’ ACES. Mikey asks if anyone’s checked Carter’s sleeve, as he goes out in 5th position.

Slowfinger Paul Sr. goes all in on AdKh against humble chip leader Carter’s Js6c on a flop of Qs4c6h. Carter folds. Paul Jr goes all in with 10K without looking at his cards. Joe raises, then folds. Carter raises on an open-handed straight draw (9s2s) against 7s,6s,5h,7c and Paul Sr.’s Qc8c. Carter folds, and Poppa Paul wins side pot, then beats Paul Jr. Junior’s gone at 4th position.

Joe raises on AdQd against Paul Sr.’s Ah9c before the flop of 7d,3h,Kc. Poppa’s all in, while Joe wonders if he’s bluffing. After agonizing, Joe folds - but he would have won had he raised the flop instead of calling. However, Poppa then admits to playing poker for 35 years. He’s playing the conservative.

Joe’s got KsJs and raises $95K instead of calling $24K. Paul Sr. gets AhQsd and wonders what to do. Meanwhile, Joker Joe pulls out and starts reading a “How to Build a Cheap Chopper” book, getting a chuckle out of Paul Sr., who folds. Carter’s got QhTh. Flop is Jh, 8c, 4d.Carter bets 100K. Joe goes all in with $150K. Carter calls 50K on his inside straight draw (three hearts). The turn is 5h, the river is 6s - and Joe wins.

Paul folds. Joe only checks his AdKh against Carter’s 6s4s. Carter bets 100K. Flop is 5h,Kc,7h. Joe goes all in on 270K. Carter folds, and Joe refuses to show his cards.

Carter’s got a KhTd and calls 40K. Joe folds. Paul Sr. has 8s3d to flop bottom pair on 3h,6d,As. He goes all in, 135K. Carter calls, wincing only slightly when they both reveal their cards. The turn’s 6h, to create a board pair. Carter needs an A or T. The river’s an A, booting Paul Sr. out at 3rd position. Poppa’s conservative play doesn’t pay off, leaving the Trading Spaces boys in the finals.

Carter’s got 9s4d and calls 20K. Joe’s got Kh3s but raises 100K. Carter calls. Flop is Jd,9d,Jh. Advantage, Carter. Joe goes all in with 185K, bluffing. Carter calls. The turn is 10s. Joe’s holding in. The river is a K. Joe outdraws and wins the pot. What luck. He’s got the slight chip lead now.

Ante’s up to 10K. Joe raises 260K on 8s8h. Carter calls 200K on Ac4s. The flop is 6s,Jc,7c. Carter bluffs and goes all in, $440K. Joe counts his chips, stalls for a long time, then folds. The bluff works.

Joe has Ad5d, calling 30K. Carter has Jc2c and raises. Joe goes all in on 330K. Carter calls. The flop is 9h,2d,8d. Carter flops a deuce, but Joe has a nut flush draw. The turn is 3c, so Joe has a straight draw as well. And the river is Td, so Joe stays alive once again.

Carter has Kh9c, Joe: KsQh. Flop is 9h,2h,8c. Carter goes all in with top pair, 850K. Joe goes all in, despite his hand. The turn is 8s, the river is 3c. So Carter takes 1st place, with Joe taking 2nd position.

Overall, a good-natured rivalry for several good causes, and a great way to reduce the gambling stigma of poker.
