Texas Hold ‘Em As A Means To Paying Your College Tuition?
Written by Raj on January 13th, 2006
Close to home, a student at my original college alma mater, 22 year old Steve Paul-Ambrose just won US$1.36 mil in a tournament in the Bahamas.
In a Kitchener-Waterloo newspaper article, Paul-Ambrose, a Master’s student in Economics, says he played online for 12 hrs/wk for about 2 years. He qualified for a tournament in the Bahamas, hosted by PokerStars, and beat out 700 players for top prize at the Atlantis Casino-Resort on Paradise Island.
Paul-Ambrose says he wore a hat and sunglasses at first, worried about his poker face, but only for a few hands before learning to just stare at the table. The amusing part of the story, shared by his girlfriend, is that upon returning to Toronto, Canada’s Pearson Airport, Paul-Ambrose used a parking coupon to save himself $14. Fortunately, this young man has a head on his shoulders, and plans to continue with his studies.
This student isn’t the only young person doing well in poker. Card Squad has a story today about the top 10 under-30 poker players. This list includes Phil Ivey, Tuan Le, Allen Cunningham, and others. What I personally like about poker is that the field is open for pretty much anyone who builds their skills. There’s no need to be in a clique. What’s more, most players seem pretty down to earth, and if you get into tourneys, you can even hobnob with celebrities, who’ve also caught the poker fever. The game is a fine example of various social circles intersecting.

pok.erati — Selling hoards of domain names
January 14th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
[…] The US Gaming Exchange has been collecting domain names for some time now, trying to build the largest network of gambling sites online, but it’s time to move on. They’re selling their entire portfolio on eBay, 1,673 dot-com names, with a starting bid of $150,000. Not sure how many bids they’re going to get, but check out the auction here. Ben, one of my roommates and frequent poker opponent, has a post at his site College Startup about collecting and selling domain names for profit. Only a few months ago he sold our old site ThePokerBlog, which has a few new writers and seems to be doing really well. They just wrote a post on a college student who won the WPT event in the bahammas for over one million dollars! One of my classmates from Ohio State finished at the final table taking home over $300K as well! Shows that college-aged kids are starting to really be a force in the poker world abroad and online. Good luck on the felt! […]
