The Slow Fingers of Paul Maxfield Are No Match For Tuan Le
Written by Raj on January 8th, 2006
If you watched the WPT Championship on TV on Sunday, you know that there was a double upset, with favored players, Phil Ivey and Hasan Habib, being turfed at #6 and #3, respectively.
Poor Ivey. His AQ pocket cards were defeated by Hasan Habib’s QQ. Apparently, Ivey has a bad history with AQ. Next to go were Rob Hollink and John Phan. Hasan Habib gave a commendable effort, but Paul Maxfield was saved by the river card for the third time in the championship. Maxfield was mr. slowfinger, folding most of his hands - a strategy that helped keep him in the game for a showdown with aggressive Tuan Le.
But despite being saved several more times with the river card, Maxfield eventually lost to 26 yr old Le, after several hands of changing roles between chip leader and short stack. Interestingly, Le started the championship off as short stack, but with his aggressive style, managed to parlay it all to a win. I wonder if he came through on his promise on drinks for all, that he made to the audience about two hands before winning.
