The Turn of Equipment
After reading Ben’s post on poker chip selection I decided to follow-up with what I call the ‘turn and river’ of equipment. Yes, I just made that up. Anyhow, I’m talking about the table and cards you’re using. You can’t have the best $1.00/chip poker chips and play on a rusty card table with your Hawaii vacation cards now can you? I’ll go a little more in depth into my experiences with different cards and tables. First though, the tables:
The table sets the entire mood, besides maybe lighting and pretzels, its all about the table. First things first, felt is a must. It can be fake felt, table-top felt, built in felt, green - red - blue - purple. If you don’t have felt you hurting yourself. Plus, with the cards I’ll be talking about felt is must or the cards will glide right over the table. I’m going to approach this from different sizes of budgets.

For those less addicted to poker or maybe just not as good and thus have less money, the table-top versions are a good place the start. You can find them in octagon, circle, or long rectangle shapes. They usually have a plywood base covered in a cheap felt, with designs for seating 8-10 people. Some feauture cup holders and chip trays as well. The octagon one is retail around $50 while the rectangle is currently on sale! for $79.99 here
The next level up from the table top would be the fold-out table. This is probably most people’s best option. It can be packed away and brought out for special poker occasions but still offers the real feel of felt and offers the rubber lining. The picture to the left is a find we found at Amazon.com for little over $119.99! Unbelievable deal. As long as you look around you can find great prices for great products.
Now, last and surely not least, the mother of all poker tables. These tables cost hundreds of dollars and are probably only bought by serious gamers, pro atheletes, and people with too much money. Not much to say about these except overkill, wow. I want, I need.
