2005 WSOP: Pot Limit Omaha

Last night ESPN showed the $1,500 + rebuys pot limit omaha event. While a lot of poker players will say they hate omaha, I think it’s because most of them don’t understand the game. It may not be as exciting to watch as no limit hold ‘em but it’s still a great game that takes years of dedication to master. In fact, Sammy Farha, the guy who got beat by Chris Moneymaker, is one of the best pot limit omaha players in the world.

The show was well done, showing a number of different playing styles. Josh Arieh was obviously super aggressive. While it’s hard to tell what he was doing the whole time, ESPN certainly made it seem like he was playing every hand. From the hands I did see, he was playing loose and aggressive - a style that suits many of the best omaha players.

Omaha is a game that relies on great post-flop decision making. If you can see lots of flops cheaply, you’re bound to make all the money back with one big hand if you can make good decisions after you see the first three cards on the board. It seems that this was Arieh’s strategy and it worked.

Chris “Jesus” Ferguson seemed to be playing a little bit tighter, trying to wait for big starting hands. This style can also suit a great omaha player since there are never any antes in a pot limit omaha tournament. I think if he had been dealt a few more big hands he would have won another WSOP bracelet.

Omaha is a very fun game to play, and if you’re looking to find another game besides Texas hold ‘em to get good at, Omaha is it. Give it a try and maybe you’ll become one of the best Omaha players in the world.
