Hurricane Katrina

I’ve been trying not to write about hurricane Katrina on this blog as it’s about poker, but it’s apparent that this is the worst natural disaster the United States has ever experienced. New Orleans seems to only be getting worse by the hour and what was initially hundreds of deaths has turned into potentially thousands. Fortunately, the poker community can help.

First, anyone can donate to the disaster relief fund at redcross.org. They are asking specifically for cash to help aid the victims of hurricane Katrina rebuild their lives.

Secondly, several poker sites will be hosting charity tournaments.

PokerStars is hosting 4 charity events. PokerStars will match the tournament pool and all of the money will be donated to the hurricane Katrina relief fund. Since the cash will not be up for grabs, PokerStars will be giving out special prizes to the winners. The tournament times are as follows:

  • September 12th 9:30 pm EST - $5+0 entry tournament
  • September 13th 9:30 pm EST - $20+0 entry tournament
  • September 14th 9:30pm EST - $50+0 entry tournament
  • September 16th 9:30pm EST - $100+0 entry tournament

PokerStars provided similar help to the victims of last years tsunami and playing in their tournament is a great way to have some fun and help out thousands of people who lost everything they owned.

Along with PokerStars, Bodog announced that they would be holding 5 daily tournaments to benefit the victims of hurricane Katrina.

As I get more information I will post more hurricane Katrina relief tournaments. With early estimates at $25,000,000,000 in damage, donating a few hundred dollars in the least we can do to help.
