Pot Limit Omaha Mistakes
Written by Ben on August 16th, 2005
One of the reasons I love playing pot limit omaha is because a lot of people migrate to the game from texas hold ‘em and play with the similar, aggressive style that they play texas hold ‘em with. That’s their first mistake, and as it turns out, it was my mistake today too.
I usually play fairly loose preflop in an omaha game and make my money with post flop decision making, similar to what I do in texas hold ‘em, but I am much tighter after the flop in omaha.
I was dealt A♣J♣7&spades7♦ on the button and decided to make a small raise preflop. I was playing a $.05/$.10 game trying to get my “feel” for omaha back. I made it $.30 to go and everyone called, which is to be expected as omaha is a game that is determined by flops, not preflop hands.
The flop came 7♥3♣6&spades. Everyoe checked to me, I would have expected a 45 to bet to try and push out some of the higher straight draws, but no one did. Having top set and runner runner nut flush draw potential, I went ahead and bet the pot. Only one person called me and I figured him for AAxx or something similar.
The turn brought a K♣. I have a lot of outs at this point and again my opponent checks to me. I bet the pot, he calls again. Maybe my AAxx read was right and he just can’t get away from it. But I realize that my read may be way off as I don’t play much omaha.
The river is a blank, 9&spades and I am sitting with a set of 7s. My opponent bets the pot. What?! What could he possibly have that he decided to bet the pot with? Did he hang on to his 810 to hit an inside straight draw?
I reluctantly call his bet and he shows KKxx. He had checked called his set ont he turn with a potential flush draw out there - what the heck was he thinking? I don’t know, but he played the hand well enough to win and that’s all he needed to do.
If you’re an omaha player, please let me know what I did wrong, I know there was a way for me to lose less money in this hand, I just don’t see what it is. Would you have folded that set of 7s on the river?

Hey,
You have enticed me to post again after nearly a year of silence.
It looks like you ran into a holdem player trying out some pot limit omaha. Imagine this was a holdem game with only his 2 best hole cards in play, from his point of view he played it perfectly. Totally oblivious to the possible made hands and redraws he was up against. Ironically your opening raise and subsequent pot bets probably had him thinking you were pushing too hard for a made hand and his check call on the turn was pure holdem, although pretty weak play by him with a 4 flush out.
Other than that, I might have been inclined to take a free card on the turn, no point building a pot without the nuts (it is small stakes omaha after all). Then decide if you are gonna call his cheaper pot bet on the river.
On another note you will see some weak/tight players try to get to the river as cheaply as possible to see if they have a lock before taking any aggressive action, again, thats small stakes PLO.
enjoying your blog.

Shoot,
I forgot to mention it, cos I got so “wrapped up” in what he showed down.
You should have been quite fearful of the card that fell on the end.
The way your opponent played this hand he could have easily had something like 689T, 5789 or 789T.
If he had any of these type of holdings then he may have been right to call pot bets from your set and even the nuts on the flop, I reckon you only need 13+ outs to call a pot bet.
I have been playing quite a bit of omaha over the last year and even if I had flopped the nuts on that board, I would have been prepared to lay it down if I had faced a pot bet on the end in your situation.
Just something to consider for the future.
