Poker at college

College campuses have already been taken over by poker and it’s been written about hundreds of times. But not many college students have offered their opinions. The general consensus seems to be that an form of gambling that detracts from school work is not a good thing. I disagree.

A lot of the games on college campuses are for $5. This means students pay $5, they get maybe T$2500 and play for a few hours. It’s gambling, but on a small scale. Movies costs $10, bars cost $20+ - recreational poker costs $5. For students trying to save money, poker is a fun way to pass the time on a boring Friday night.

I know there are games where people buy in for $100, $200, even $500 or more. I’ve been at the games, I’ve played in those games. Most of the people playing in these games are very good at poker and well aware of the risk and the potential problems gambling can cause. If these students are willing to risk their money on poker, let them. If someone migrates from a $5 game to a $500 game, maybe then people should worry about it.

I understand that poker can lead to gambling addiction, but no more so than drinking can lead to alcoholism. There are much bigger problems than poker on college campuses. Students skipped class long before poker was running rampant and they will skip class long after poker is gone.

I personally enjoy playing against people who are willing to throw their tuition money on the line in a big poker game, I generally win it from them and pay for my own tuition. So lets not try to stop poker - it is helping as many as it hurts.
