The pre-flop all in

I’ve noticed more and more people moving all in pre-flop. There are very few instances when this is a proper play. Once you move all in, it eliminates your ability to make decisions as you get more information throughout the hand.

Why are professional poker players so good? Because they constantly make better decisions than their opponents. It may be because they get a read or because they know the odds, but it all comes down to decision making. If you move all in pre-flop, you’ve effectively eliminated your ability to make the best decision on the flop, the turn, and the river.

Your AK may be ahead preflop, but what if the flop comes Q J 4 and your opponent happens to have AQ? There are hundreds of reasons to fold on that flop with AK - but if you’re all in, you’re suddenly a huge underdog in the hand. The people I see complaining about rivers are the ones that didn’t give themselves a chance to make a decision on the river.
